Did you hear about the big, big idea spawned in Central Point and spread to the Rogue Valley Council of Governments? Wouldn’t it be great if Oregon invested in two years of free tuition for public university or community college for our students? I refer you to David Sarasohn’s column in the Opinion Section of the July 27 Sunday Oregonian. Greatly simplified, Oregon sells bonds for infrastructure for bridges and potholes — why not sell bonds for education at public schools of higher learning? Isn’t the loss of our youth to out-of-state institutions due to our very high costs in education part of a bigger picture? Our failure to locally train students to enter fields of science — engineers, physicists and medical — is part of the reason we have difficulty staffing highly scientific industry jobs and hospitals and medical clinics? I think mainly of the difficulty OHSU has in recruiting teachers to serve locally at EOU training students and staffing the Union and Elgin clinics, and the often futile search for physicians to serve in rural areas. Would it not be better to “grow” our own? Dr. Robertson of OHSU told our Cove-Union-Powder Medical Association when people are trained in rural areas or have frequent rotations through rural clinics they tend to remain there. Let’s get on the bandwagon! Sue Briggs Union |
