Disappointed
I am writing this letter as an individual and not a member of any organization. I want to make it perfectly clear that this is my opinion and only my opinion. The Color Guard for the Huckleberry Parade was once more performed by the High Valley Post 4060 out of Union. This year’s parade was probably my biggest disappointment I have ever seen. When the parade was told to start in two minutes, the sheriff’s lead car and the VFW Color Guard began to move forward. They got about 200 yards into the parade and the sheriff’s car came to a halt. Asking what was wrong, he indicated that no one was following behind us. After about 10 to 15 minutes, the library float appeared coming around the corner. We once again began to march and when we got to the post office for the National Anthem to be sang, it appeared that the words to the song were forgotten a couple of times. Once again we had the problem of the crowd not showing respect to the flag. Instead of standing and removing hats when we came by, we were met with those who do not understand that it is their flag that we are carrying and that it is proper to stand, remove their hats and hold their hand to their hearts just as they would during the singing of the National Anthem. This was very disturbing to me and makes me wonder if this nation is forgetting its loyalty to the flag and the country. Ken McCormack Union |
