Kitzhaber wrong

To the Editor:

It’s the season we are supposed to be forgiving and loving and care for our fellow man, but I find it very hard to care for a twice-convicted murderer and even harder to understand why our governor can’t bring himself to allow the execution of this coward.

Gary Haugen has already proven he is unable to be rehabilitated. First, he bludgeons his former girlfriend’s mother to death, and then he brutally stabs (84 times) and crushes the skull of a fellow inmate, and our governor tears up over this coward and cannot impose the death penalty!

Now we, as taxpayers, have to support this murderer and 37 more because the governor cannot do what he was elected to do — and that was to impose the laws of the state of Oregon.

The voters of the state of Oregon voted in the death penalty. Gov. Kitzhaber says, “I don’t care what the voters say, I don’t care what the courts say.” If he can’t do the job he was elected to do, he should resign.

Why is it the governor is allowed to change the rules to suit his own beliefs when the voters of the state of Oregon have made it clear — through a democratic process — that they want the death penalty?

There are those who actually believe that the criminal has rights that should be protected. Once convicted — the criminal has lost his rights. He had the right not to commit the crime and he has the right to know that if he brutally murders not once, but twice, he is going to die by lethal injection.

The governor is taking away the choice of the citizens of Oregon — to execute these cowardly monsters.
