Ladd Marsh fee needed

To the Editor:

I was disappointed to read the Observer editorial on Jan. 11 protesting the imposition of user fees for Ladd Marsh.

The point you make, that times are hard, is not a compelling reason to deny support to the Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area, one of Union County’s best assets.

The $7 fee you complain of is no more than the cost of a matinee at the Granada, a couple of beers at the Ale House, a hamburger, fries and a shake lunch, a fancy coffee drink and pastry, and the fee pays for a full car, not just a single user.

Up until now, only hunters have contributed to the support of the marsh, since a portion of license fees goes directly to maintain it. Now all the users can help to sustain it.

It will still be possible for people who enjoy the drive to pass through the area without paying a fee but those who use it can buy a year pass for $22, no matter how often they visit. Others can buy a one-day pass for only $7. A bargain.

I encourage you to rethink the position you have taken.

There are many reasons to support the fee and thereby help to continue the vital work of Ladd Marsh.

Take care crossing road

To the Editor:

The morning of Jan. 10, I was driving down Fourth Street. The traffic was heavy and I was following along behind several school buses. There were several cars coming toward me with cars parked along Fourth.

I watched four young boys on the sidewalk next to the parked cars and, suddenly, they stepped off the curb and started to run across the road.

I’m sure they were thinking, with the bus stopped, they could run between my car and the bus, but thankfully the driver in a blue car slammed on his brakes. The first boy could actually touch that car, then all traffic was stopped and the boys ran on across the road.

This was across from the courthouse, so the boys were several car lengths from a crosswalk. I was so thankful there was not an accident, but wanted to alert parents and teachers to remind students to cross the street only in crosswalks.

Of course, I have no idea who was driving the blue car, but wanted to commend him for being so alert.

I also want to say a big thanks to God, who watches over children and adults.
