Place for animals needed
To the Editor: In the past, the animal shelter has done an excellent job of finding new homes for many unwanted dogs and cats, in addition to euthanizing unsafe and aggressive dogs and feral and unwanted cats. There simply are not enough homes for all the unwanted dogs, cats and kittens in this community. As explained in a recent Pet of the Week, now that the animal shelter has become a “no kill” facility, it will no longer accept feral cats, kittens or unsafe dogs. But there is still a need in the community for some facility to dispose of aggressive dogs, feral cats and unwanted kittens.
Perhaps the county and city could look into contracting for these services Unless there is a place to take these animals, it is likely that people will simply turn them loose. Hundreds of unwanted cats and kittens left to fend for themselves each year will decimate the bird populations and spread disease to people’s pet cats. Please let the mayor, city council members and county commissioners know if you are concerned about this issue. People can also help by spaying and neutering their dogs and cats.
