Ashamed of council

To the Editor:

This is written to comment on the dedication of the veterans memorial in Cove this past Saturday, June 25. The VFW Post 4060 from Union relocated the existing monument, purchased a new flag pole and provided all the necessary funds and labor for the installation and dedication of the monument.

There were about 20 people who took time out of their day to attend the ceremony, which lasted about 25 minutes. We of the VFW are very grateful to all of them.

The mayor, even though he was 100 percent aware of the time and date, chose to visit a sick friend. The city council, whose excuses I don’t know, also chose to absent themselves from the dedication. The names of the men etched in the stone all gave their lives for this country and the people living here, so that we could all live and do as we choose. Apparently, the mayor and city councilors made the choice to serve the city of Cove, but obviously didn’t care enough to participate in honoring the people who made it all possible.

I personally am acquainted with some of them and it is my personal belief that they should all resign their positions with the city.

I hope all the people in Cove are very proud of them. As of right now, I am ashamed to tell people I live in Cove.

Great show at state park

To the Editor:

We attended an event last year at Emigrant Springs State Park that was most enjoyable and economical. I would like to alert your readers of this opportunity for a pleasant and relaxing evening.

The state park at Emigrant Springs comes alive with music on the evenings of July 7, 8 and 9 at the park community center. This free entertainment is courtesy of Oregon State Parks and the Blue Mountain Old-time Fiddlers Association.

The shows begin at 6 p.m. each evening and will include from 15 to 30 individual or group performances. This fast-paced event features musicians from throughout Eastern Oregon, as well as some out-of-state talent.

Blue Mountain Old-time Fiddlers President Denny Langford, of Union, provides a fun evening and lots of give-away prizes.
