The wolf threat
Wally Sykes astonished me in his letter to the editor, titled “Treading a fine line,” published in the June 16 Observer, causing me to feel the need to comment. Mr. Sykes states, “Up till last week, about 60 head of dead cows and calves have been buried at the Wallowa County landfill, which gives an idea of how small the proportion of wolf depredations is to cattle death by other causes.” My comment is that “death by other causes” does not normally include being chased, cornered, attacked, torn apart and eaten alive by a pack of fierce, vicIous killer wolves. I was led to wonder if he would make similar comments when those monsters kill “a small ... proportion” of wives and children, not to mention family livestock and pets.
