Five blood drives prove success

To the Editor:

The five American Red Cross blood drives this year in La Grande were successful.

Our goal was to collect 70 units at every drive, and we were 23 units over for the five blood drives in January, April, June, September and November.

We had a lot of community support — vendors and individuals who donated and the volunteers who helped the Boise workers.

The next blood drive is set for Feb. 9 from noon to 6 p.m. Register by calling 541-562-5055.

Respect others’ viewpoints

To the Editor:

Dear Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce,

It was with some dismay that I read the Oct. 26 La Grande Observer article, “Couple’s Plan to Develop Bed and Breakfast along ‘Wolf Highway’ Meets Resistance.”

I have been disappointed with some Wallowa County residents’ reaction to the repopulation of the area with wolves. However, I respect their right to their opinion.

It now appears that the Wallowa County Planning Commission has yielded to bullying from some of these same citizens and refused to rule on a conditional use permit for a bed and breakfast. According to the article, the proposed use was “within the law.” Many objected to the proposal because the Hunters “are friendly with environmentalists.” So much for freedom of association and job creation.

The implication is Wallowa County does not want people who are concerned with the environment, or people who are friendly with environmentalists, in their county. I farm in La Grande. I have always enjoyed visiting and shopping in Enterprise and Joseph. I now feel unwelcome in Wallowa County.

Your website indicates that “knowing and supporting one’s neighbor, a hallmark of small-town life, is something we consciously practice and prefer.”

That is a wonderful sentiment that seems to have been lost in this case. I urge you to work with your members to determine whether the choice is really between the range economy and the tourist economy. I believe that all people can be welcome; we just need to respect others’ views and opinions and not force ours on everyone else.
