No ethics

To the Editor:

There are no ethics when it comes to some lawyers. If you want your assets distributed per your will, be sure you appoint someone you can trust to be your personal representative.

My friend, Joy Dobbin, is a case in point. She inherited a lawyer after the death of the lawyer that wrote the will that she and her husband Bill had written. This new lawyer, whom she did not know, now held power-of-attorney.

Joy told me there’d be no change in the will. After discussing her will with me and telling me she did not have anyone written on paper to be her personal representative, I tried to convince her she needed to do that detail if she really cared what happens with her money. Joy never followed up on that suggestion. Neither did the attorney.

As a result, the attorney wrote himself as personal representative, which allowed him to do whatever he wanted with Joy’s assets.

Timber land that was supposed to go to the college was sold to the lawyer’s friend. The college staff knew about the will and the lawyer was on the endowment committee at the college. Conflict of interest?

An amount of $100,000 that was supposed to go to the will benefactors was loaned to a private party.

People, if you are making out a will, find someone you can trust to be your personal representative. Do not trust your attorney!
