Keep bank open

To the Editor:

I believe it is not in the best interests of Community Bank and the citizens of Union to allow the Union branch to close.

I believe the board of directors of Community Bank should reconsider its decision to close the Union branch and, 16 miles away, keep two branches, one mile apart, open in La Grande. I would hope they could find another way to react to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

I believe small rural communities are best served by community banks where assets are generated locally or from close-by rural communities. When assets are locally based, it encourages loaning to rural economic development both private and public. In Union, Community Bank holds the considerable assets of both the city and the school entities as well as many private businesses.

I believe banking will be a hardship for citizens needing to use a drive-up window. Seniors as well as those of low and moderate income who do not drive need a convenient community-based bank.

Our chamber and Union businesses involved in economic development feel closing of the Community Bank thwarts the “buy local” campaign. The basic principle of “shop local” keeps money in the community and has proved to encourage greater economic development.

Whether you are a customer of the bank, a citizen of Union or not, let your desires be known. There are petitions at local businesses or start your own. Address letters and petitions to Division of Supervision and Consumer Protection Federal Deposit, Attention: Regional Manager, 25 Jesse St., Ecker Square, Suite 2300, San Francisco, CA 94105-2780.

Send copies of your correspondence or petitions to President and Board of Directors, Community Bank, 1288 SE Commercial Drive, College Place, WA 99324, and to your county, state officials and federal congressmen.
