Let citizens decide

To the Editor:

We are writing in reference to Gary and Nancy Bruch’s letter on annexation. Our concern is with item 10 of their letter. This is simply untrue.

We are the persons who opposed that annexation. We did so because the city of La Grande chose not to allow the people on the North Side to vote on that proposal.

LUBA found the agreements to annex (many of them over 30 years old) did not meet annexation statute requirements. Oregon’s Court of Appeals agreed. The city did not propose to extend water, sewer or do street work for us at no cost, as suggested by Gary and Nancy. These activities always require taxpayer dollars.

The legal fees exceeded $15,000. We admit, however, that over the years, we are recouping these funds through property tax savings. As the city stated earlier this year, the increased revenue from the proposed annexation will help them with their budget issues. That revenue will come from the pockets of the North Side residents, if the proposed annexation passes.

Because of the earlier legal findings, Gary, Nancy and all of the North Side residents now have an opportunity to vote on the current annexation proposal. Hopefully the residents of the North Side review items 1 through 9 and 11 of Gary and Nancy’s letter very carefully, and then vote.

Should the annexation proposal not pass, and you wish to live inside the city limits, there is the option of moving. You should not live in the urban growth boundary if that makes you uncomfortable. If the annexation vote passes, then the people on the North Side will have made that decision, and not the city. That is the way it should be.

Media bias

To the Editor:

The mantra of the media, especially over the last 2 1/2 years, has been that Republicans, the party of no, have stopped President Obama from getting what he wanted done.

The Democrats had the presidency and both houses of Congress — complete control of the government until the last 10 months. One needs to look no further than the front page headline of the AP article that The Observer chose to run, to find an example of liberal bias: “Senate Republicans likely to kill Obama jobs bill” ...  the Senate is controlled by the Democrats.
