Richter, Levesque, Rich
Everyone in our area should know what a fantastic performance they will have missed if they don’t take the time to see “The Sound of Music’’ at the Elgin Opera House. I know, you saw the movie — doesn’t matter — this production is just as good and features our local talents! From the stage props to the singing and acting to the directing: Bravo to each and every one of those involved! It is worth the drive, the expense of the tickets as well as an evening of true entertainment! Judi and Ivan Richter Elgin Sept. 19 is National Pow/MIA Day. Our nation owes a lasting debt of gratitude to all those selfless and heroic members of our armed forces who risked freedom and safety to defend the lives and liberty of others. Today a new generation of American military service members stands ready to defend our freedom, our liberty and our way of life. We must always remember in a special way those Americans who remain missing and unaccounted for from all our nation’s past wars and conflicts. We should make sure our government officials are committed to the fullest possible accounting of our missing comrades from all our nation’s past wars. The VFW and all our country’s veterans associations ask us to fly the American Flag on Sept. 19 to show support for our MIAs and their families. The Union VFW will host a memorial service and potluck dinner at 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Union VFW Hall. All veterans and their families are welcome. Please bring a main dish and a side or dessert dish. Bob Levesque La Grande On Sunday our town of Cove was visited by approximately 2,000 cyclists, riding in Cycle Oregon. They made a lunch stop in Cove and then continued on to Union for the night. We’re sorry to say that as far as visible acknowledgement of their passing through, there was absolutely none. No balloons, no welcome sign on the reader board, no signs anywhere. We don’t know if people of Cove are aware that Cycle Oregon does many charitable things for communities they pass through, such as football field lights in Dufur, to which they donated a good sum of money. Regardless of whether they do anything for Cove or not, our city fathers should have acknowledged and welcomed them in a more visible fashion. Cycle Oregon is, after all, a pretty special event.
