Much not said

To the Editor:

It’s not what Wally Sykes says. It’s what he doesn’t say.

Who are the wolves howling on upper Prairie Creek and elsewhere? Who made the tracks the hunters are seeing? Uncollared wolves?

Confirmed, probable and “possible/unknown kills” do not include livestock that come up missing above and beyond the normal loss during the fall gather. Research has shown that only one in seven wolf kills are confirmed.

What deterred the wolves during calving? Maybe vigilant ranchers. What about the death of a stressed female wolf during a collaring episode on private ground?

Wolves, coyotes and dogs went through the fladry. Deer and cougar are coming into town in increasing numbers. Like I said, it’s not what Wally says. It’s what he doesn’t say.

Not in Union’s interest

To the Editor:

The most recent news of Community Bank Branch in Union closing has me worried. I’ve learned that the closure possibly will cause a decrease in local spending. The bank will leave behind an empty building in a community with already too many unfilled storefronts.

Along with this, the closing will have adverse effects on low- and-moderate-income families and senior citizens. There will be a decline in financial investments and a loss of community confidence if the bank closes.

The decline of banks and the rise of alternative services, for example financial services charging much higher fees and check-cashing outlets, in low-income and rural areas mean that communities most in need of economic development have less access to capital and pay more for basic financial services. The closing of Community Bank is not in Union’s best interest.

We must hold Community Bank accountable and pressure them to take responsible corporate action. This will only happen if we ask for it — and ask persistently and effectively. Please join me in a letter-writing campaign and sign the local petition to keep our bank open.

The petitions can be found at Hometown Hardware, Sight-n-Sounds and Gravy Dave’s in Union. You can write to: Division of Supervision & Consumer Protection Federal Deposit, Attention: Regional Manager, 25 Jessie St., Ecker Square, Suite 2300, San Francisco, Calif. 94105-2780.

Even if you are not a member of Community Bank, you are encouraged to write and share our concerns. It is our responsibility to advocate for ourselves and urge Community Bank to do the right thing for our community.
