Remembering those who serve
With Sept. 11 soon approaching, I am sure many are thinking about where they were 10 years ago on that date when America was attacked by terrorists. I will never forget the numbness I felt of unbelief and grief as I watched the destruction of the World Trade Center Towers as planes were flown into the buildings killing thousands. I was amazed by the heroic efforts of the first responders who were entering the buildings trying to help those who were trapped inside. Many of those brave servants of New York City died in the line of duty on that day. I think about that each time I see one of our local men or women in the uniform or one of our emergency services or even hear the scream of a siren blaring down the road going to the scene of a need in our community. These brave people who serve and protect our community put their lives in harm’s way each time they go on duty. This is a service that we, the citizens of this valley, should appreciate, respect and remember. Since that day, we have had several hundred thousand of our American military serving in the War on Terror, many of whom have sacrificed great in their service to our country. In our own community, the members of the 3/116th have served two tours of duty in this battle against evil in our world. Each year Summerville Baptist Church recognizes this special remembrance in our nation’s history. We would love to invite each person to join us Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. to be part of this special service. Each first responder and military personnel will be honored with a gift in appreciation for their service in our community and in our country. Franklin Humber La Grande |
