The watch never ends
On this 10th anniversary of 9/11, more than ever remember that the watch never ends and as citizens, we are always on watch. The police and military are our first line of defense. But it is also the collective responsibility of all to ensure the continuing protection of our communities against the common foes, whether thieves or international terrorists. They can attack soft, easy targets, but they cannot conquer unless “We the People” allow them to. Furthermore, while they ache to attack again, they also know they will incur our collective wrath — again! And like all cowards, they do not wish to get their noses bloodied — that they have often thumbed at us — again. Ron R. Fischer Elgin
Am I the only one who wonders why we need three telephone books in this area? Personally, I only use the Blue Book. Several reasons, really. The print is larger; I can find everything I need; and it covers all the surrounding cities — just what a phone book is supposed to do. With our growing dependency on computers and cellphones, how long will we need phonebooks anyway, let alone three? Then there is the waste of paper. I hope they are using recycled paper because just how long can we afford to clear-cut the trees in our area to which most of our communities are dependent on to survive? And then who do I call to stop getting the other two books I recycle upon receipt? Judi Richter Elgin
