Fratzke, Morgan
Over the last couple of days, I have listened to the media and read letters to various newspapers by hardcore supporters of Obama and Biden. Each of them have lambasted, criticized and just plain been nasty to John McCain and Sarah Palin about Mrs. Palin’s inexperience to govern. My request to all of you who support Barack Obama and Joe Biden is to please respond by listing in detail all of the governing or executive decision-making experience that either Sens. Obama or Biden have had. I am sorry, but I have read their biographies and I find absolutely zero, zip, none. In order for voters to make an intelligent decision in their choice for the next leaders of our country, they should have the facts. So please help everyone out here with what the Democratic Party’s biographies have apparently missed. David Fratzke La Grande I was encouraged by promises to avoid divisive political tactics of past general elections. Unfortunately, John McCain seems to have gone back on his word. Sarah Palin’s convention speech was filled with divisive, hateful language and falsehoods. Her claims of rejecting the “bridge to nowhere,” for example, when in fact she supported it wholeheartedly until it became politically inconvenient. (She kept the $233 million). But the personal attacks are what really offended me and so many Americans who are fed up with politics as usual. Palin and Giuliani ridiculed Obama’s experience as a community organizer. Much like some of our own local youth who have joined the Peace Corps after college instead of going straight into a high-powered career, Obama wanted to give something back to the country that had given him so much. He walked away from lucrative career opportunities and went to the South Side of Chicago to help people in need. Community organizers dedicate themselves to a cause bigger than themselves. We have many examples of community organizers right here in La Grande. Habitat for Humanity builds homes for families who may not otherwise be able to realize home ownership. Impact 100 is a group of outstanding women whose generosity helps many people and groups in need. The beautiful new “Play Grande” at Riverside Park was designed, funded and built by community organizers. Perhaps Palin finds it strange that a man with so much promise would turn down financial riches to gain deeper understanding of the world we live in. But I find it awe-inspiring. This is exactly the kind of quality that I want to see in the next president of the United States. Amy Morgan La Grande |
