Fight global warming

To the Editor:

In the Aug. 6 Observer an article appeared on page 9A announcing that July was hottest ever in history books.  It gave the latest hottest records for the U.S. and called it a double whammy of heat and drought along with the effects of global warming.

As we know and appreciate, the Pacific Northwest has been the coolest part of the country for much of this summer.

This article should have been on page one, folks. The evidence is mounting that the projected warming and climate change resulting in more intense storms, drought, heat waves, etc., is occurring at a more rapid pace than expected.

We all need to inform ourselves and do what we can as individuals and communities to slow this pace.

In this election campaign season, you will not hear from the candidates about the seriousness of this situation, let alone possible policy implementation on a national or global scale — it is a political non-issue for obvious reasons. As scary as it is, nonetheless it is imperative that we continue to let our representatives know that this is a top priority. Nothing less than the survival of all life on earth is at stake once the average global temperature increase reaches a tipping point.

A good book on the subject is “Six Degrees” by Mark Lynas. It is not an easy read because no one wants to believe climate catastrophe can happen.

Also Google Parasol Climate Collective, a Portland based study group engaged in educating themselves and others about climate change; they have compiled study guides and provide an extensive reading list and can answer all inquiries.

You love your kids and grandchildren and you love Mother Earth and all living things, think about this and ACT!

A very concerned citizen.

Stephanie Messersmith

Thanks for letting me be your postmaster

To the Editor:

I would like to thank the community for the time I was able to spend with you as postmaster.

I have met many fine people and have enjoyed getting to know many of you. The best part of the job was what I called customer service.

Many people have come and gone in the time I was there and they have left a little hole in my day. I will miss the times with those of you who shared your day and stories with me. This was the best job I could have had. Thank you, Cove citizens.
