Letters to the editor for February 15, 2013

Where will this all end — president for life?

To the Editor:

Some people have asked me why I am not writing as often. I’ll try to do better

Several have asked, Is the president going to seek a third term?

I believe he will. As the world has been allowed to see the power this president has with his executive directives, he has demonstrated his authority to say he has no respect for the Constitution. If he doesn’t like it, issue a directive and go around the Constitution. Everybody knows those feeble-minded old men who wrote the Constitution were very weak indeed.

My guess? Yes, he will bypass the Constitution for a third term. The Supreme Court is a “Yes, Mr. President, go for it. We will support you.”

What will the end of this be? Like all the royalties of the world, how about president for life?

I believe it will happen. Look, no weapons, a powerless Congress. What’s to stop him?

Stand up for right to bear arms

To the Editor:

I am a “bitter clinger,” according to Obama, and a “domestic terrorist” as defined by the Department of Homeland Security. I cannot sit idly by while our right to bear arms is diminished to the point we are told what we can have and how much.

I support and commend the sheriffs of this nation who are defending our constitutional rights of the people to keep and bear arms.

The definition of “infringe” is “to act so as to limit or undermine.” Even a lawyer should be able to grasp the meaning of the Second Amendment. There have been thousands of laws gun control laws passed that violate the meaning of what our founders intended. Connecticut is a strict gun control state and none of the laws prevented the tragedy at Sandy Hook. Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C., are as strict as or more so to the point that the citizens of these cities are forbidden to own a firearm yet they have an epidemic of homicides.

The AR-15 is again being demonized and has been proposed to be banned again when in fact the first ban was insignificant to the crime rate. Excluding combat, the AR-15 and AK-47 have killed fewer people than hammers and knives. The statement made that referred to assault weapons having no other purpose than being an aggressive is asinine. I carried an AR-15 as a sentry dog handler during the Vietnam War strictly for defense and it would be my choice today to defend my home.

The founders wrote the Constitution more than 200 years ago and no way could imagine the changes that have occurred over that period. What they did realize is that the people are the militia and that they have the inalienable rights to keep and bear arms for the purpose of defending themselves against a tyrannical government.

Over the past couple of months, the people have emptied the shelves of gun stores and it’s not that they are preparing to go hunting in the fall. Could it be that the people are leery of the current regime and are prepping for the worst. Those who think it can’t happen here are totally naive. FDR rounded up a group of American citizens, confiscated their wealth and property and sent them to concentration camps because of their ethnicity.

Gun confiscation starts with registration, background checks and then seizure of one’s weapons. The people of Germany, the Soviet Union, China, Cuba and Cambodia were disarmed because they didn’t have the Constitution to protect them as we do.

The sheriffs are abiding to their oath of office by standing up to these unlawful doctrines and drawing the line by vowing to not enforce them. They have become the front line and are courageous in doing so. We the people will back them up; the sheep will continue to do what sheep do.
