Letters to the editor for July 22, 2013

Thanks to our state legislators

To the Editor:

The Journal of the American Medical Association July 10, 2013, online publication includes a paper titled “The State of US Health, 1990-2010 Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors.” I quote the following from the abstract:

“The United States spends the most per capita on health care across all countries, lacks universal health coverage, and lags behind other high-income countries for life expectancy and many other health outcome measures. High costs with mediocre population health outcomes at the national level are compounded by marked disparities across communities, socioeconomic groups, and race and ethnicity groups. Although overall life expectancy has slowly risen, the increase has been slower than for many other high-income countries. In addition, in some US counties, life expectancy has decreased in the past 2 decades, particularly for women.”

Thanks to our enlightened Oregon legislators, House Bill 3260, the Oregon Health Care Financing Study Bill, has passed both houses with bipartisan support. This bill is the next step in addressing how we pay for health care for everyone in Oregon. Thank you Eastern Oregon, Sen. Bill Hansell and Rep. Bob Jenson for voting for this bill.

Car show organizers
put on great show

To the Editor:

This past weekend I visited La Grande and had the pleasure of participating, for the first time, in the Grand Ronde-a-View car show. Arlan Miesner, the Timber Cruisers car club and the community deserve congratulations for putting together a really fine event.

As participants, we sometimes to take for granted the effort necessary to bring off a show such as this. We show up, dust off the car, sit around all day eating food we’re not allowed to have at home and telling lies about all the fast cars we had back when we still had hair. So, I’d like to say thanks for the countless hours contributed by the volunteers and matched by the generosity of your sponsors.

While many car clubs and communities stage car shows, memorable events are rare and are characterized by friendly people, imaginative activities, an attractive setting, interesting cars, fairness in judging and low cost registration. Your event excels in all these areas. They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but in La Grande there is a free dinner at the car show — a feature absent even at events charging 3 or 4 times your registration fee. Even as simple a thought as including microfiber towels in the participant’s goody bag demonstrates the thought that goes into the event.

All these features clearly confirm that yours is a show of car people, by car people, for car people. Well done. Thank you. See you next year.
