OUR VIEW: A black day for advocates

Friday was a big day for domestic violence survivors and advocates — and not necessarily in a good way.

OUR VIEW: State needs to reverse ed. trends

Maybe you won’t make a million more dollars over your career if you finish college instead of go to work straight out of high school.

OUR VIEW: Our pick for state’s new statue

Gov. John Kitzhaber thinks Oregon may need a new statue to represent us. We have a suggestion: the Oregon taxpayer.

OUR VIEW: Keep open lines of dialogue

There’s no question that Common Core remains a polarizing topic both here in Northeast Oregon and across the nation.
And rightfully so. The standards, which are intended to ensure that students graduate from high school prepared to do college-level work, were not crafted overnight. They are a major improvement over previous standards in most states, but they remain a work in progress.

OUR VIEW: School scenarios startling

It’s hard to imagine our children in danger, especially in a place that is intended to prepare them for the challenges and reality of adulthood.
Sometimes, though, unspeakable realities occur in schools, as we’ve seen in the media over the past decades.

OUR VIEW: No repeat of last fall needed

Lawmakers are already streaming back to the nation’s capital but if voters expects wide-sweeping change or any kind of legislative innovation during the next session of Congress they will almost certainly be disappointed.

OUR VIEW: Judge's decision not a surprise

For at least a couple decades, Union County has been in dire need of a new courthouse.
The old courthouse had many defects that made holding trials a trial. It is, without doubt, antiquated, outdated, perhaps the most unuseful courthouse in Oregon.

OUR VIEW: Heroic efforts save town

One fact of modern life is we need more heroes. Not just from the military, sacrificing time from their families and risking their lives to protect our freedoms in hot spots around the world. Not just from the legions of professional athletes, who perform otherworldly feats but do not always live up to our expectations when it comes to treating partners with respect or being role models.

OUR VIEW: Signs the least the state can do

If there can be a feel-good story revolving around a vicious conflict that consumed more than 57,000 American lives, the effort by local veterans groups to raise funds to place signs along Interstate 84 that designate the highway as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway fits the bill.

OUR VIEW: Moraine should be preserved

The old T-shirt slogan couldn’t be more appropriate: “Think Globally, Act Locally.”

With all the environmental issues out there, from urban sprawl to global warming and destruction of the rain forest, from genetic engineering to habitat destruction, it’s easy to get swept away in this or that cause.
