Quilt show set for Women’s Connection

Quilts are stories told by the quilter one stitch at a time.

Each piece of fabric and the overall pattern are carefully chosen, as well.

Some fabrics have a particularly special meaning to the quilter — cut from a long gone beloved grandmother’s apron or scraps left from a now grown child’s favorite dress.

Valley Fellowship hosts Stanford debate on intelligent design

WHAT IS OUT THERE AND WHERE DID IT COME FROM? These are questions that will spark the live Stanford University debate "Atheism vs. Theism and The Scientific Evidence for Intelligent Design," live simulcast to be broadcast at 6 p.m. Sunday in the conference room at Valley Fellowship, 507 Palmer in La Grande. This picture of the Helix Nebula posted as NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day on May 10, 2003, quickly became an urban legend dubbed "The Eye of God." It is the closest example of a planetary nebula created at the end of the life of a sun-like star. It lies about 650 light-years away and spans about 2.5 light-years in size. Our daughter Mollie, now 19, introduced us to VeggieTales back in the mid-1990s when she was in grade school. Somebody at church or school introduced her, and she was hooked. She wanted a video of her own.

I don't remember the year, I don't remember whether it was Christmas or her birthday and I don't remember which VeggieTale it was. But as I sat and watched it with her, I remember thinking, "Wow! This is different — this is really cool." And I've been hooked ever since.

Performance of Handel's Messiah a gift to the community

Approximately 80 musicians from the Eastern Oregon region have been feverishly rehearsing in preparation of a Christmas gift to the community — an ecumenical performance of George Frideric Handel's Messiah.

Don Jensen, La Grande, will direct the 25-member orchestra, 50-voice choir and soloists Tina Christensen, Helene Hipple, Phil Hassinger, Aubrey Winn and Chris Eves in two 7:30 p.m. performances, Dec. 7 and Dec. 8 at the LDS Church, 1802 Gekeler, La Grande.
