Mounties make right choice in hiring Barrett

Last week, Eastern Oregon University announced the hiring of Jared Barrett as the new men’s basketball coach.

And, without knowing how the next season or two may go, I think the hire was the right choice.

Here’s why.

Barrett is an EOU alum, first off.

I think that’s an important factor when hiring someone to take over a program that has had the success that EOU has had over the past nine-plus years.

Barrett knows the area and what to expect.

That familiarity will give him the ability to hit the ground running in the recruiting stage, knowing exactly what EOU and the surrounding area has to offer.

Also, since he is a graduate of EOU, he will take great pride in trying to continue what has been built.

He also played with former head coaches Isaac Williams and Ryan Looney.

All three men were successful players and parlayed that into successful assistant coaching careers before taking the reigns of EOU.

If there is ever a guy to continue what Looney and Williams started, it’s Barrett.

With any new hire, there are question marks. Like will any of the players on the current roster decide to transfer to a different school?

What type of offense will the Mountaineers run under Barrett?

What type of recruiter will he be?

Those are questions that are always asked when a new guy takes over a college program.

But for now, until we see the product that Barrett produces, I’m happy with the hire and couldn’t be more excited about next season.
