BRUSH BEAT: ARPAC to meet in Salem

SALEM—The first meeting of a new Archery Review Public Advisory Committee will be 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday at ODFW headquarters in Salem (4034 Fairview Industrial Drive SE).

The group is being convened to review the structure of archery deer and elk hunts across the state. Topics of discussion may include antlerless elk harvest, bag limits and approaches to controlled hunt tags.

ARPAC members include representatives from ODFW, Oregon State Police, Traditional Archers of Oregon, Oregon Hunters Association, Oregon Bowhunters Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Mule Deer Foundation, Professional Bowhunters Society and several non-affiliated, “at-large” bowhunters from around the state.

Members of the public are also welcome to attend the meeting but will be asked to hold their comments until a designated time for public comment during the meeting. Comments can also be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

In recent years, more than 31,500 bowhunters have pursued deer and more than 28,000 bowhunters have pursued elk annually in Oregon.

Youngs Bay could close

SALEM — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced the proposed boundaries and time period for a closure of the area at the mouth of the Youngs Bay to recreational salmon fishing during the 2014 salmon season.

The closure, along with several other changes to fisheries management, emerged during the 2012 process to restructure sport and commercial fisheries on the Columbia River. The proposal is similar to one considered by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission in December 2012.
