BRUSH BEAT: ODFW issues clam permits

SALEM — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will award four coast-wide bay clam dive permits April 11, 2014 at ODFW headquarters in Salem.

“The commercial bay clam dive fishery in Oregon is limited to 15 permits –10 coast-wide permits and five south-coast permits,” said DeAnna Erickson, license service manager for ODFW. “If the number of permits falls below 15 we hold a lottery to bring the number back up to 15. Currently there are four coast-wide permits available.”

Bay clams are harvested by licensed inter-tidal commercial harvesters and also by permitted sub-tidal divers. Harvest focuses on cockles and gapers, though butter, littlenecks and softshells are also landed.

Fisheries set to open in April

THE DALLES — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced that the popular spring Chinook fisheries on the Deschutes and Hood rivers will open April 15.

Public being asked for input

NEWPORT — ODFW will host two public workshops this week to solicit community input on management plans for Oregon’s two newest marine reserves at Cascade Head and Cape Perpetua.

The meetings in Newport on Wednesday and in Yachats on Thursday will focus on how the agency will monitor the social and economic effects of the creation of the reserves, and how the agency shares that information with the public.

The meeting for the Cascade Head Marine Reserve will be at the Newport Recreation Center, 225 SE Avery St., Newport from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The meeting for the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve will be at the Yachats Common, U.S. Hwy 101 at 5th Yachats St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
