NO CHILD LEFT INSIDE: Spring is great time to take kids for a snow day

I’m not a huge fan of spring, particularly March and April. Trying to will away the overcast skies and will in the beautiful weather must take a toll on my kids and me. In the valley the signs of our mild winter are quickly disappearing. If only we could easily see beyond the hills to be reminded that the mountains still have plenty of snow, beckoning us to continue to come and play.

While I wish winter would transition right into summer there are a few aspects of spring, other than flowers, that I do look forward to. I love spring skiing, sledding, snowshoeing — spring snow anything. It’s an awesome time to get out in the snow with your family

For those of you who have had hesitations about taking your young kids for a venture in the mountains the warm spring weather is a great time to give it a try. Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen, and bring plenty of water and snacks to keep everyone hydrated and happy. The warm weather might give you more confidence and you won’t be as worried about cold fingers and toes.

If you want to make a great day of your outing head out prepared for hours of fun. Grab your small grill, a cooler of food, some lawn chairs, and a sled to haul them in to your ideal location.

We like to pick a spot near a good hill and set up base camp for the day. This is an especially great idea at a ski resort soon after they close for the season.

Toys like those you’d take to the beach can be perfect for snow and keep kids occupied for hours. If you have a young child that you’d like to keep contained there’s no one stopping you from bringing a pack-and-play. That’s a brilliant idea we learned from friends. Heck, bring a tent and some sleeping bags where the kids can crash when they need a break.

If you really want a successful day invite friends with kids so they can entertain each other and the adults can get some snow time in too. Milk winter for all it’s worth. Soak up the rays. Often times the weather in the valley might not be ideal but at a higher elevation it’s a bluebird day. Don’t forget that spring can be perfect for a family snow day.

Meg is a local mom of two boys. She has a degree in outdoor recreation and loves to be outside with her family and friends. You can contact her with your favorite ways to get through spring at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
