Powers-less: Badgers advance, win

BADGER BEWARE: Powder Valley sophomore Sami Fritz helped her team to its opening- round victory Wednesday night versus Powers. The Badgers will visit Griswold at 5 p.m. Saturday for the right to qualify for the Final Eight at Pacific University Nov. 9-10
NORTH POWDER — They shook pom-poms, clapped, chanted, cheered and, at one point, even pulled off The Wave.

Such enthusiasm from passionate parents and students inside Powder Valley High propelled their Badgers to victory Wednesday in a three-game sweep against visiting Powers (25-18, 25-23, 25-21).

Goodbye, Round One.

District dominance

TOUGH 10: Union/Powder Valley cross country runner Michael Cox (far right) took eighth at the district meet at McKay Park in Pendleton. The team will compete state meet at Lane Community College Saturday.
PENDLETON — An amazing effort led to a district championship for the Union/Powder Valley boys cross country team.

The team placed five runners in the top-10, including three in the top-four.

Union/Powder Valley coach Steve Sheehy said his team is flying.

Panthers prowl, win district title

Badgers still alive: Powder Valley sophomore Sami Fritz (pictured) and her Badgers teammates placed third at the 1A-7 Old Oregon League District Tournament. The Badgers host Powers (1A-4 Skyline League third place) on Wednesday night. If Powder Valley wins on Halloween, they will play Saturday, Nov. 3 at Griswold (1A-6 first place) for the right to advance to the final eight at Pacific University.
There was the solid-white volleyball, dropping in a tailspin of destiny toward the EOU Quinn Coliseum hardwood.

When it finally struck, the Imbler bench emptied. The crowd roared. And as Panthers players and coaches met in a celebratory huddle, they jumped and hugged and exhaulted their right index fingers toward the heavens.

Check for rabies: Bulldogs bite

PLAYOFFS? Max Nicholson looks toward the Tigers sideline Friday night, awaiting the defensive play call. A Tigers (1-1, Greater Oregon League) victory or Mac-Hi (0-2 GOL) loss Friday will give La Grande an OSAA playoff spot.
BAKER — They came inside hoping to put the Bulldogs to sleep, like they were armed with muzzles and leashes. But out they went like they were scratched and bitten, wondering if they endured rabies.

The Tigers allowed Baker off that winless leash Friday, losing 26-7, leaving a stinging feeling for their postseason aspirations.

Bobcats offense MIA in title game

DIVING DIG: Union's libero Shoshoni Walker digs one of many balls fired to the back row by Weston-McEwen Thursday in a 3-0 loss.
ELGIN — Maybe it was the neutral site or having a player in a different number. Whatever it was the Bobcats struggled Thursday.

The Union volleyball team fell in three games (25-21, 25-13, 25-14) to Weston-McEwen in a playoff for the number one seed in the Blue Mountain Conference.

Bobcats head coach Rhondie Kohr said it wasn't the game she envisioned.
