BMC: Bobcats advance with overtime win

HERMISTON — The Union boys basketball team went into the Blue Mountain Conference postseason tournament as the No. 2 seed, but a 49-39 loss to Stanfield in the opening round nearly derailed its chances of advancing to the state playoffs.

The Bobcats got some help by Weston-McEwen in a loser-out game Saturday to punch a ticket into the state play-in round.

Union picked up a 46-45 win in overtime against the TigerScots.

Weston-McEwen could have won the game from the free-throw line, but struggled. The TigersScots had one player go 1-of-10 from the line in the second half, including 0-of-6 in the fourth quarter.

Still, Union was outscored 11-5 in the final quarter to force the overtime period, with Union able to squeak it out.

Bobcat sophomore Chase Houck had a big game for his team. He scored 10 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

“It was an amazing game,” Union head coach Brett Dunten said.

“Chase was a monster on the glass. He made up his mind that he was going to get as many rebounds as he could.”

J.D. Graves added nine points for Union, while Kenneth Sipp and Ty Coon each scored seven points.

Union trailed 23-22 at the half, but grabbed a 37-31 lead headed into the fourth quarter.

Linton McAllister led the TigerScots with nine points.

Kolten Youncs and Tyler Simmons each scored seven points for Weston-McEwen.

Union will host a playoff game against Regis at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Rams finished third this season in the Tri-River Conference, and are currently on a three-game losing streak.  Regis finished 14-12 overall and 11-5 in conference play.
