BOYS PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Bobcats cruise to weekend sweep

UNION — It didn’t matter where the shots were coming from, the Union boys basketball team knocked them down against Enterprise Saturday.

The Bobcats continued their push towards a second-place finish in the Blue Mountain Conference with an 81-47 win against the Outlaws. 

Union jumped out to a 29-9 lead in the first quarter, getting nine points from J.D. Graves in the paint. The Bobcats also hit three 3-pointers in the quarter. 

Graves kept the scoring going before the half, finishing with 17 in the first half. Graves finished with 23 points. 

Chase Houck added 15 points for Union, while Ty Coon added 12 points. Cortin Nowak scored nine points.

Enterprise (5-14 overall, 2-14 BMC) was led by Damon Greenshields with 15 points. Kayden Lathrop added 14 points.

With the win, the Bobcats stayed a game in front of Stanfield in the conference standings. Union has two games left on the schedule against Grant Union an Irrigon.

Union opened the weekend with a 57-35 win against Elgin, using a strong start and finish to pick up the win.

The Bobcats (14-8 overall, 11-3 BMC) jumped out to an 18-9 lead after the opening quarter, and closed the game with a 13-point advantage in the fourth quarter.

Houck scored seven of his 11 points in the final quarter. Coon hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, and finished with 17 points.

Jake Burgess was the lone Husky in double figures, finishing with 13 points. Stephen Howes added five points.

Elgin (6-14 overall, 4-9 BMC) will travel to Pilot Rock for a 7:30 p.m. game Wednesday. 

Union will travel to Grant Union, while Enterprise will host Heppner Friday. Both games are set for 7:30 p.m.

Imbler picks up a pair of wins in Wallowa County

JOSEPH — The Imbler Panthers boys basketball team extended its winning streak to three games Saturday night 

The Panthers went on the road to defeat Joseph 76-40. 

Imbler post Trace Vancleave finished the night with a game-high 20 points. Eli Bowers added four 3-pointers, and finished the game with 12 points. Joe Griffin scored nine points. 

Joseph’s Cayden Delury scored 11 points. Sam Beckman finished with nine points and Deni Van Winkle ended with five.  

The Cove boys lost to Imbler 57-34 Friday. 

Leopards coach TedRoy McBride said his team just couldn’t get shots to fall early in the game. 

“We weren’t so aggressive and the game felt like it was a lot closer, but it was clearly in their hands,” McBride said.

The Leopards were led by Colton DeMeerleer, who scored 12 points. Bailey Hill and Derrick Murchison each finished with 6 points. 

Cove (12-7 overall, 5-3 OOL) will play Pine Eagle (6-11 overall, 3-5 OOL) Thursday. 

The Panthers (17-3 overall, 8-1 OOL) will be at home facing Wallowa (3-16 overall, 2-7 OOL) starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Badgers keep pace with Panthers for first place

WALLOWA — The Powder Valley boys basketball team dominated in a 70-39 win against Wallowa Saturday. 

Marcus Pratt had a game-high 18 points. Quin Stephens finished with 13, and Jason Benites scored 12. 

This was the eighth consecutive win for the Powder Valley Badgers. 

The entire roster for  Powder Valley got into the scorebook during a 78-33 in a home game win against Pine Eagle Friday. 

Pratt scored a game-high 15 points. Quin Stephens finished with 10. Tyler Robinson and Jason Benites each scored seven points. 

For their final game, the Badgers (18-1 overall, 8-1 OOL) will travel to Cove for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff Friday.
