Colton delivers knockout punch to help Powder Valley advance in playoffs

NORTH POWDER — Alexandra Colton was born in 1995. Eighteen years later she’d recreate the most memorable basketball shots from the year of her birth.

“I had never seen the play,” Colton said.

The Powder Valley girls basketball senior channeled her inner Tyus Edney, the former UCLA guard, to lead her team to a 48-47 overtime win against Adrian in the opening round of the state play-in games in North Powder Tuesday night.

Edney drove the length of the floor in 4.8 seconds to score the final two points in a Bruins 76-75 win against Missouri in the NCAA tournament. Colton weaved through the Adrian defense with 6.9 seconds left on the clock. The play ended with her laying the ball off the backboard and into the net. All the Antelopes could do was throw up a full-court prayer that never made it to the rim.

Colton’s amazing play throughout the game even left her head coach at a loss for words.

“She’s just an amazing athlete,” Powder Valley head coach Allen Bingham said. “I don’t know how she does it.”

Bingham drew up the final play for Colton to get the ball. He yelled onto the court to remind Colton to go deep to catch the ball.

“I yelled out onto the floor to give her some final instructions,” Bingham said. “The Adrian coaches heard me. They were trying to yell at their player out on the floor, but she couldn’t hear them. The crowd made it too loud. That’s what saved the game.”

Colton nearly left the floor not as the hero, but as the player that missed the shot that led to the loss. Colton missed a lay-in 10 seconds before that would have given the Badgers the lead.

“I didn’t want my season to end that way,” Colton said. “I wanted another chance more than anything.”

The thing is, Edney did it once. Colton did it twice in the same game.

Colton ended overtime on a personal 6-1 run against Adrian. In the fourth quarter it took Colton swiping the ball away from a defender near half court and laying the ball in to tie the score at 42-all. The possession before Colton ran the fast break to perfection. She dished the ball off to Maria Bedolla, who laid the ball in off the backboard. Bedolla had missed the last two games with a knee injury.

“We were glad to get Maria back,” Bingham said. “There were a bunch of girls that weren’t feeling well. Bailee (Allen) was recovering from an illness and Alexandra didn’t feel good the night before. Monday night was a bad practice. We didn’t want to run too much. I was a little worried. But, the team played well today.”

Powder Valley jumped out to a 17-11 lead after one quarter. But the Badger offense went quiet after that, going scoreless for more than six minutes. During that stretch Adrian went on a 11-0 run to take a 20-17 lead. Bedolla scored the only three points for Powder Valley in the second quarter.

Adrian’s Quincy Pendergrass had nine of her 10 points in the first half.

“Lindsey (Lonenning) isn’t the quickest player on the floor,” Bingham said. “But she’s fundamentally sound, and did a great job sticking with (Pendergrass). Being able to shut her down was one of the keys for us.”

The Badgers took the lead again, 38-35, in the fourth quarter, but the Antelopes answered back. Adrian took a 42-38 lead following a Tane’t Campbell basket. That set up the Powder Valley comeback.

“We just want to make it back to Baker,” Colton said. “We’re a game closer to doing that now.”

Powder Valley will wait to see who it will play Friday in the second round of play-in games. The winners of the second round games travel to Baker City to compete for the state title.

Colton had a game-high 23 points, and was the only Badger in double figures.

Adrian was led by Clara Feldman with 18 points, while Carlee Morton finished with 10 points.
