OOL: Panthers hold off Badgers to win tourney

BAKER CITY — Powder Valley’s gas tank was riding on empty during the championship game against Imbler Saturday.

A tight game turned the way of the Panthers in the final quarter. Imbler escaped with a 37-27 win to clinch the top seed into the state playoffs.

Lexee Robertson and Katie Barry helped the Panthers pull away in the fourth quarter. Barry opened in the final eight minute stretch with a basket, just her third of the night, but it gave the Panthers a 25-22 lead. Robertson made two field goals to extend the lead to 33-25, and then Malia Mills landed the knockout blow. The senior made four straight free throws to ice the game, and went 6-of-6 in the fourth quarter from the free-throw line. Mills finished with nine points in the game.

Imbler’s bench outscored the starting five 20-17 in the game. Powder Valley did not have a bench player with points.

The Powder Valley offense that had been potent throughout the tournament never got on track. As a team the Badgers shot 19 percent from the field in the game. Alexandra Colton did reach double figures with 11 points on 3-of-11 shooting, but didn’t have the transition baskets she’s accustomed to scoring.

Colton was the lone Badger in double figures. Bailee Allen finished with eight points and 13 rebounds. Sally Mary Blair added five points and 10 rebounds.

But it was Robertson, a freshman, who stole the show. She received extra minutes with senior Jacey Teeter in foul trouble.

Robertson finished the game with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Powder Valley will host Adrian Tuesday. Imbler will host a second-round game Thursday.

Cove grabs third seed

BAKER CITY — Led by a late push by Mikalya Murchison, the Cove girls basketball team grabbed the final spot into the state playoffs from the Old Oregon League Saturday.

Murchison had a game-high 24 points to fuel a 52-42 win against Joseph in Baker City. The senior post also grabbed 14 rebounds. Murchison scored 19 of her points in the second half, including 13 in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles were looking for the upset, entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed. Cove, the No. 2 seed, trailed 22-21 at the half. The Leopards shot 52 percent from the field in the second half to keep the state playoff hopes alive.

Joseph running on fumes — playing its third game in three days — lost starting guard Hailee McClure to a sprained ankle in the first quarter. That meant extra minutes for an Eagles team with little left in the tank. It showed on the floor. Joseph shot 37 percent in the first half, but that number dipped to 28 percent in the second half — going 7-of-25 from the field.

The worn-out legs also allowed the Leopards to crash the boards. Cove outrebounded Joseph 45-32, with an 18-10 advantage on the offensive glass.

The Eagles’ bench tried to help the winning cause, but it wasn’t quite enough. Natalie Williams had a team-high 12 points off the bench, while Lindsay Kemp added 10 points. Brenna Gibson led the starters with 10 points.

Cove got 10 points from Kayla Johnson, while Molly Delcurto finished with eight points. Delcurto also grabbed seven rebounds.

The Leopards will travel to Dufur for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday. The Rangers finished the season 19-7 overall, and fell to Condon/Wheeler 55-25 in the Big Sky championship game.
