Tigers fall to Philomath in consolation loser-out game 

CORVALLIS — After a good first quarter things went downhill in the consolation bracket for the La Grande girls basketball team Thursday morning in Corvallis.

The Tigers were eliminated from the Class 4A state tournament with a 48-31 loss to Philomath.

La Grande holds off Henley in quarterfinal showdown in Corvallis

CORVALLIS — All the hard work through the opening half nearly went to waste for the La Grande boys basketball team.

The Tigers built a 28-21 lead at the half against Henley in the Class 4A OSAA state tournament quarterfinals, but had to hold on for a 59-56 win Thursday.

As the La Grande girls basketball team prepares for its quarterfinal state playoff game against La Salle Prep at 8:15 p.m. tonight, head coach Doug Girdner knows his team is ready.

Last year, La Grande was the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A bracket.

 

Elgin and Imbler opt for baseball co-op

ELGIN — Elgin and Imbler high schools are almost set to combine forces on the baseball diamond this spring.

The Elgin School Board voted Thursday to have Elgin High School form a baseball co-op with Imbler High School this spring. The Imbler School Board earlier voted in support of co-op. The co-op will become official once it is approved by the Oregon School Activities Association. The OSAA is expected to vote on the co-op very soon, said Elgin School District Superintendent Wayne Herron.

Screams of excitement echoed out of the La Grande girls basketball team’s locker room. After all, the Tigers are headed back to Gill Coliseum.

La Grande earned a spot in the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A playoffs, overcoming a slow start and the loss of the lone senior on the roster to pull away for a 43-36 win over Central Friday at La Grande High School. La Grande advances to face La Salle Prep in the quarterfinal round in an= 8:15 p.m. game on Wednesday at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.

 

Union brings home state hardware

PENDLETON — The Union girls basketball team might not have come home with the trophy it wanted to from the Class 2A state tournament, but it still brought home hardware. 

The Bobcats headed to the Pendleton Convention center with their sights set on another trip to the championship game. 

 

Powder Valley falls in third-place game

BAKER CITY — Crosshill Christian rallied midway through the fourth quarter Saturday to defeat Powder Valley 60-54 in the Class 1A state boys basketball third-place game at Baker High School.

Leading 47-45 with 4:11 left in the game, the Eagles went on an 11-1 run during the next two minutes to pull away.

La Grande’s boys basketball team goes 10-0 on their home court

The La Grande boys basketball team entered Saturday’s matchup with Yamhill-Carlton undefeated on its home court.

And with that momentum at home, Yamhill-Carlton did not stand a chance, as La Grande pulled away for a 74-55 win in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs. The win clinches a spot in the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A state tournament against Henley at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.
