Union brings home state hardware

PENDLETON — The Union girls basketball team might not have come home with the trophy it wanted to from the Class 2A state tournament, but it still brought home hardware.

The Bobcats headed to the Pendleton Convention center with their sights set on another trip to the championship game.

But after falling to Western Mennonite to the opening round, the eventual state champions, Union had to shift its goal. In the end the Bobcats were one of three girls teams at the tournament to end their season with a win, knocking off Portland Christian 36-29 to finish fourth in the state.

It was a tight game through the opening three quarters, but Union went to its calling card in the second half to pull out the win.

The Bobcats defense held Portland Christian to five points in the fourth quarter, and only allowed the Royals to shoot 4-of-23 from the field in the second half.

One of those shots was a 3-pointer by Cezane Brunner that cut the Union lead to 28-27 with 7:04 left in the fourth quarter.

Both teams went scoreless for more than three minutes until Keesha Sarman provided a steal and score with 3:16 left in the game.

Sarman’s basket turned into a 6-0 run, capped by two Delanie Kohr free throws with 37 seconds left, that put the game away.

Sarman finished with a game-high 17 points. She added nine rebounds and six steals. Kohr added eight points, while Sarah Good finished with seven.

As a team, the Bobcats shot 35 percent from the field, while the Royals shot 20 percent.

Serena Remington led Portland Christian with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Demi Gould finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Union will battle next season for a trophy. The Bobcats return the starting five from a team that finished the year 25-4 overall.
