8-man All-Star game kicks off Saturday

It’s time to start turning our attention back to football.
The summer all-star season kicks off Saturday at Community Stadium on the campus of Eastern Oregon University. “It’s a great game,” Cove head coach Todd Shirley said. “Plus the college gets to have a bunch of graduated kids on their campus. Some of them might not have decided where they want to go. EOU has a chance to reel them in.” Don’t be alarmed if the field looks a little wider. It’s an 8-man game, in its 20th year, this weekend that will feature some of the best Class 1A athletes in the state.The East team features four players from a Joseph team that finished second in the state in 2008. Gavin Baynes, Sam Garnett, Clancy Warnock and Ethan Lowe will represent the Eagles. Andrew Wilson (Wallowa), Joey Brown (Powder Valley) and Justin Brainerd round out the Old Oregon League players on the East roster. “This is a special game for a lot of these seniors,” Shirley said. “It’s a chance to put on a football uniform and pads. For a lot of the kids playing, it will be the last time they get to suit up.” The East trails the series 10-9, and has some redeeming to do after last season’s 28-2 loss. Brody Wilkins, of Mohawk, stole the show last season to lead the West. “I would think the kids are a little more geared up this season,” Shirley said. “Brody is an amazing an athlete. I just know the East wants to make up for the loss last season.” Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
