La Grandes Shalece Hibbert could hardly believe her selection to the Class 3A/2A/1A all-state soccer first team.
I was really surprised. Greg told me and I was just like, What? she said.
Senior classmate Greg Schuft, like Hibbert an Eastern Oregon League player of the year, was also named to the all-state first team Tuesday.
La Grande had three other players receive all-state recognition. Junior forward Lindsey Carmichael and senior forward Karli Nebeker were named to the girls third team, and sophomore defender Aaron Nebeker was given honorable mention on the boys team.
Schuft was his teams leading scorer, and Hibbert was her teams leading defender.
Schuft scored 27 goals this season, more than twice as many as his nearest teammate. In five straight games in September, he scored at least three goals in all five games.
I was happy I made it, but at the beginning of the season I wasnt expecting that, he said. Its easy to get noticed when youre on a great team.
Hibbert led a defense that allowed just six goals all season, including 13 straight shutouts.
We always set goals for individual and team, and my individual goal was to be more of an all-around player, she said. She did that by just seeing the field and being able to contribute to every aspect of the game, instead of just defense.
Hibbert scored six goals this season, many of them on free kicks.
The La Grande boys reached the state semifinals for the first time before losing to Marist. The girls lost to Marist as well, but in the quarterfinals.
