ANIMALS TAKE ROUND TWO
By The Observer
JOSEPH The animals definitely had the better day Friday in the second performance of the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo.
Only one qualifying score was tallied in bull riding and only one person was able to get a time in the steer roping.
Zach Brown of Yorba Linda, Calif., was the only cowboy to last eight seconds in a field of 14 bull riders. Brown scored 71 points for his ride on the bull named Machine, but it wasnt good enough to surpass any of Thursdays top-five rides.
The same thing happened in steer roping, where John Freeman of Boise took down his steer in 14.4 seconds. He was the only qualifying time out of six ropers.
Maureen Crossley of Hermiston topped the barrel racing in 17.24 seconds, giving her the best time in the first two days.
Another time that was toppled went to Mel Coleman of Phoenix, Ariz., and Clint Harry of Nixon, Nev., in team roping. The two paired for a 5.5-second time, besting Thursdays time of 6.0 seconds.
Seth Hopper of Stanfield earned the best time in two days with a 9.8-second mark in calf roping.
Brad Gleason of Touchet, Wash., took down his steer in 3.8 seconds in the bulldogging event, taking over the top spot from Tyler Bronkhorst, who had a 4.7-second time Thursday.
Other Friday winners included Jerad McFarlane of Redmond in saddle bronc riding with a score of 79, and Jason Havens of Redmond in bareback riding at 81 points.
The rodeo continues tonight at 7 and the final performance starts at 2 p.m. Sunday.
