BABE RUTH BOYS OFF TO REGIONALS
The Union County Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars made history Sunday.
Union County rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat Beaverton 8-6 in the Babe Ruth North Oregon State Tournament Championship in Hood River Sunday.
It is the first 13-year-old Babe Ruth team from Union County to win a state championship.
Manager Darwin Roberts said he is proud of how the team played at state and stepped up in the championship game and took Beaverton away.
"Beaverton was a tough team and our kids wanted it a little better and wanted it more," he said.
He believes Union County has a pretty good chance at this week's Pacific Northwest Regional Tournament in Bozeman, Mont.
"If we play like we did this past weekend, I don't see anybody standing in our way," he said. "They're pretty excited about it."
Union County is one of six teams in the National Division. The other National Division teams are from Montana, North Washington, Alberta, Wyoming and Belgrade.
Union County departs today on an 11-hour drive to Bozeman.
The M.J. Goss Motor Company donated a Chevrolet Venture van to the team for the trip to Montana.
Roberts said Union County is physically and mentally strong and prepared.
"I'm feeling pretty good, and they are too," he said.
Union County begins play against Belgrade, Mont., Friday. The boys play North Washington Saturday, Montana Sunday, and Wyoming Runner-up and Alberta Monday. The semifinals and championship are Tuesday.
The games will be played in Bozeman and Belgrade.
The Union County team members are Richie Carmichael, G.D. Clark, Josh Homan, Travis Ludwig, Jacob Johnston, Cody McKague, Taylor McIntosh, Anthony Nice, Joshua Nordstrom, Andrew Tao and Taylor Workinger. Monte McIntosh and Rich Carmichael are the coaches.
