BADGER DEFENCE BATTERS ECHO

While the Powder Valley offense sparkled under the lights Thursday, the Badger defense shone the brightest.
Powder Valley rolled past Echo 62-8 in a game played at Eastern Oregon University's Community Stadium, the first night game in school history. The Badgers held Echo to 110 yards of total offense on the night.
Badger head coach Skye Flanagan said he was delighted with the effort.
"This was the most complete game we've played in three years," Flanagan said. "I'm proud of how the kids played tonight. They came out with a purpose and followed through."
Powder Valley recorded 15 tackles for loss, resulting in a loss of 67 yards, forced three fumbles and three turnovers on downs.
Badger sophomore Casey Wendt had three sacks and a forced fumble, while Ben Nelson had two forced fumbles.
Wendt, who had one sack going into the game, said it was an unusually successful night.
"I usually don't get that much penetration," Wendt said. "I normally have a lot tougher time. I had a little more energy. Hopefully, I can keep up this pace and add to it every week."
The combination of stout defense and three long returns by Chris Horne kept the Badgers in prime field position. Powder Valley started eight of its 11 possessions in Echo territory.
Horne racked up 115 yards on three punt returns to compliment his 37-yard touchdown catch.
Echo struggled to keep pace as the Badgers scored on six of their first seven possessions.
Echo head coach Norm Stewart said plans to deny Powder Valley the ball came up short.
Michael Stephens scored on his first touch of the second half, running for a 34-yard touchdown to put the Badgers ahead 48-0. Stephens had three touchdowns and 120 yards on seven carries.
With the 45-point running clock in effect, the second half featured just six possessions.
Powder Valley improved to 3-0 with the win, while Echo dropped to 1-2. The Badgers travel to Pine Eagle on Sept. 22 for their first league clash.
The game was originally scheduled for Nov. 3, but was brought forward to a mutual bye week.
