ELGIN Its not the glass ceiling of the corporate world, but theres something about the 5-foot mark that girls have trouble with in the high jump.

Only two Northeast Oregon girls have cleared 5 feet, and one of them, sophomore Maya Waldron of Enterprise, did it again Thursday at the Elgin Twilight.

Call it a mental barrier, one that Waldron had struggled to surpass for two years.

I jumped 4-10 in the eighth grade and Id been stuck there for a few years, she said.

Waldron first reached 5-0 on April 19 at the Jo-Hi Twilight. She repeated the feat Thursday on her second attempt.

The other 5-footer this season is La Grandes Kristin Brogdon, whose personal best of 5-2 was set at last years Intermountain Conference meet.

Five girls have reached 4-10, including two who were second and third in Elgin. Amanda Wilson of Wallowa cleared 4-10 on her first try but bumped the bar in all three attempts at 5-0.

Its frustrating because youre there and youre over and you knock it off, Wilson said.

Its the wind, Waldron added.

Yeah, blame the wind, Wilson responded.

Unions Stephanie Colkitt also hit 4-10 but finished third to Wilson because she did so on her second try. Colkitt, a senior, reached 5-2 as a sophomore.

Others at 4-10 this season include Powder Valleys Shauna Nelson, Enterprises Valerie Davis and Powders Amie Russell, who hit 5-1 last season. Davis and Russell cleared 4-8 Thursday.

Five-oh isnt the real barrier when it comes to the state meet. The automatic qualifying standard for the Class 2A meet is 4-11, while the 1A girls standard is 4-9, both of which must be met at the district meet.

In other highlights at the Twilight, Imblers Emili Woody broke her own school record in the girls 800-meters, winning in 2 minutes, 22.08 seconds. Woody set the old record of 2:27.46 last season. Her sister, Liz, also ran under that barrier, taking second in 2:25.17.

Elgin won the girls meet 138-125 over Imbler. Amber Looslie led the Huskies with victories in the 100 and 200.

For the boys, Josephs Marcus Wells had a personal best in the javelin, winning at 185 feet even. Wallowa won the boys meet, beating Joseph 128-113. Shane Byers in the 110 high hurdles and Brandon Burgess in the 800 were winners for the Cougars.
