BUCKS POUND TENSE TIGERS

By Pat Perkins

Observer Staff Writer

Dennis Young isnt too worried about his La Grande Tigers baseball teams 0-2 start.

Were going to be OK, Young said after Pendleton pounded out 12 hits and beat La Grande 10-2 in a non-league game Tuesday at Optimist Field.

We just need to relax and have a little bit more fun and when that happens well make a little run.

Pendleton scored more runs Tuesday, putting together four hits in a four-run sixth inning and adding two-run second and seventh innings.

Ten of Pendletons 12 hits came off starter Corey Royal. La Grandes Kyle Ingerson gave up two hits and two runs in the seventh inning.

Pendletons C.J. Severin had a two-run home run to open the scoring in the second inning. Darren Jio had a solo homer for the Bucks to lead off the sixth inning.

La Grande got single runs in the fourth and seventh innings.

In the fourth, Jason Smith scored after leading off with a single to left center field. He moved to second when Tanner Abel walked, went to third on a fly ball by Andy Van Sickle and scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Fischer.

In the seventh, Adam Kleck led off with a single and eventually scored on a Pendleton throwing error.

Smith was 2-for-4, while Tanner Abel was 1-for-2 with a triple and a stolen base.

The Tigers leave today for John Day, where they will play in Grant Unions annual tournament. La Grande has 11 a.m. games Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Joseph sweeps GU JV

JOHN DAY For being on the field for the first time this season, Joseph didnt do too shabby.

The Eagles picked up a pair of road wins Monday 10-1 and 10-5 over the Grant Union JV.

It was the first time we had the entire team on the field together, Joseph coach Dave Schmidt said. As we left Joseph (Monday morning), it was the first morning since December there wasnt snow on the baseball field.

The deep freeze in Wallowa County didnt carry over to Josephs offense. The Eagles hit .378 in the first game and .483 in the second. Freshman Dustin Gibbs paced the team with two home runs one in each game.

(The games) were a good lift for us, but it was definitely preseason games for us. Theres still plenty of things we have to work on, Schmidt said.

Joseph (2-0) travels March 28 to Stanfield.
