BULLS 17, COWBOYS 1
UNION It hasn't happened very often for Redmond's Shawn Waite, but he didn't have a lot of time to sit around and savor his victory.
Such is the life of the cowboys at the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show.
Waite was the only bull rider out of 18 at the opening day of the EOLS rodeo Friday to qualify for a score. That made for a special day for Waite, and a bigger cash prize.
"I've done it before, (but) not very often maybe three times in 10 years," said Waite. "It was a pretty nice day."
Waite scored 77 points for his ride on Bat the Door. He was taking off this weekend for another rodeo in Eagle, Idaho.
The bulls were king on opening day, which also featured several local riders in near-perfect weather. The best showing by a local rider was by bareback rider Nate Filbin of Elgin, who came in second with 72 points.
A crowd favorite was saddle bronc rider Kaila Mussell of Chilliwack, B.C. She was the only woman riding in the saddle bronc.
Mussell got three rides on the day, and unfortunately, on her final ride, she was thrown from her mount and kicked in the head. She was taken by an ambulance to the hospital.
Matt Weishoff of Molalla was first in the Friday bareback with a 75, while Travis Carnine of Condon was first in steer wrestling with a time of 4.8 seconds.
Brian Ford of Eugene was first in calf roping with a time of 10.4 seconds. J.L. Schaffner of Redmond was first in the saddle bronc with an 80.
Lucy Schnabele of Prineville took first in the Friday barrel racing with a time of 17.60 seconds.
Jason Minor of Pendleton and Casey Smith of Ellensburg won the team roping event with a time of 5.8 seconds.
Rodeo events will go on all weekend with saddle bronc, bull riding, steer wrestling, tie down roping and barrel racing, beginning at 1:30 p.m. today and Sunday.
