BADGER BRUISER: Powder Valley’s Trenton Dixon helped his team win its first game of the season Friday against Joseph. - Observer file photo NORTH POWDER — Powder Valley finally got a win under the lights. The Badgers scored early and often Friday night to down Joseph 42-12 in Old Oregon League play.
“We finally got the monkey off our backs,” Badgers head coach Dan Townsend said. “It’s nice to get that first win. Hopefully we can build on that win and it carries over to the rest of the season. I know it‘s been a while since we’ve won at night here.”
Trenton Dixon got the scoring started for Powder Valley (1-6) early in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run. Jesse Wetiz then busted out a 20-yard run for the second score of the game.
Dixon and Wetiz each added one more score in the first quarter as the Powder Valley offense had no problem moving the ball down the field.
“The kids have really been working hard all season long,” Townsend said. “I’m just happy for them. They played really good tonight.”
Dixon finished the game with 36 yards rushing on six carries and three touchdowns, while Wetiz ran for 55 yards on 10 attempts.
Chase Ficek had two catches for 32 yards in the game.
Joseph wouldn’t get on the board until the fourth quarter as the Badger defense repeatedly knocked the Eagles backwards.
Now that Powder Valley is in the win column, the Badgers have the tough task of hosting defending state champions Imbler this week.
“Imbler is obviously a solid football team. We’ll have to really play well if we want to play with them,” Townsend said. “It should be a fun atmosphere hosting them here.”
Joseph drops to 0-4 in league play and will face off with Wallowa Friday.
