Badgers’ streak at 13

NORTH POWDER — The Powder Valley High School volleyball team swept Cove Friday to extend its match win streak to 13 straight.

The Lady Badgers won 25-17, 25-12 and 25-13.

“To give credit to Cove, we knew they’d work hard to put a block up on leading offensive attacker Jessica Pedro as they do have a strong blocking team,” Powder coach Lasa Baxter said.

“They were effective briefly before we made minor adjustments and were able to rally back utilizing a variety of hitters and offensive plays.  We’ve been working hard to diversify our offense.”

Ali Abrego finished with 16 digs and nine kills for Powder Valley, while Pedro had 15 kills and 14 digs. Alexandra Colton added 29 assists, eight digs and two kills.

Jenna Aldrich had four digs and one kill, and McKinsey Hampton had six digs, two blocks and one kills.

Amy Eubanks had nine assists, six digs and one kill, while Bailee Allen had five digs and two assists.

“I have to give much credit to my team who is showing much maturity on the court.  During the Cove match, the girls could have easily caved from the pressure of the block on Pedro and became frustrated, but instead they remained calm, continuously playing well on defense, digging the ball up for Colton to set repeated attack attempts.  I was most proud of our ability to remain composed, never doubting the outcome,” Baxter said.

Cove coach Darcy Carreiro was pleased with her team’s effort in the loss.

“The girls came out on fire in game one. They stuck to the game plan, stayed focused and had a good time. We tried a little different rotation and even though it was tough I think the girls adjusted well to it.

“They stepped up at the net and blocked the ball very well. Mikayla Murchison and Renee Mills were all over the net,” Carreiro said.

Nikoa Murchison was perfect from the service line and had four digs. Mikayla Murchison had eight attacks, five blocks and four aces.

Renee Mills had four blocks, three kills and one dig, while Hannah Hulse had six kills, six digs and was perfect passing the ball.

Kindra Moore had 18 perfect serve-receive passes and six digs.

Skyla DeLint was nine for nine on serve-receive passes and had five digs.

“Overall we came away from the game with a lot of things we needed to work on,” Carreiro said.

“Some of the girls let their nerves get the best of them and they knew it.

“Playing in the OOL each week against great competition only makes us better every game. I think it’s wonderful that we all challenge each other every single game.”

The Lady Badgers are now 16-2 overall and 8-0 in the Old Oregon League.

Powder has lost only two sets this season in OOL play (both to Imbler) and hasn’t lost a league match since Oct. 13 of last season.

Dating back to 2010, the Lady Badgers have won 26 of their past 28 OOL matches.

Powder Valley is currently ranked second by the OSAA, sitting only behind 17-3 Dufur.

Powder Valley defeated the Rangers 3-1 earlier this year.

PHS has two matches left in the regular season before the Old Oregon League district tournament.

“We’re moving in the right direction and still making progress as we move toward the end of league season,” Baxter said.

The Lady Badgers will host Wallowa Friday and travel to play Cove Saturday with a chance to finish with a perfect league record.

The Leopards host Imbler Friday in a duel for sole possession of second place in the league behind Powder Valley.

The match is Cove’s Pink Night (see briefs) and fans are encouraged to wear pink.

Cove sweeps Spartans

COVE — The Leopards hosted Pine Eagle on Saturday and swept the visiting Spartans 25-18, 25-23 and 25-18.

Cove is now 11-5 overall and 6-2 in the OOL.

“The girls played very well at home. Our goals going into the game were to stay relaxed, have fun and speed up the pace of our offense,” Carreiro said.

“The plan worked well.”

Mikayla Murchison had three serving aces on 12 serves. She also had five kills, two digs and one block.

Nikoa Murchison was 18 for 19 serving with two digs, while Mills had six blocks, four digs and three kills.

Hannah Hulse had six kills, six digs, five serving aces and two blocks.

“I was happy with the performance and teamwork,” Carreiro said.

“They played together better than I have seen all season.

“I love to see the girls smile the entire match and really work through things on the floor.

“They are growing as a team and I couldn’t be more proud of the progress they are making.”
