UNION — When some people see an opportunity they take it.

Union did just that against Pine Eagle during a twin bill sweep 24-3, 17-0 Thursday.

The Spartans pitching doled out free gifts to their hosts — eight walks and two hit batsmen in the first two innings.

Union put 13 runs on the board in the first inning.

Kyle Langford set the tone with a lead-off triple. Then seven straight free passes followed.

Eighteen batters went to the plate in the span of 35 minutes.

That put a tough task squarely on the shoulders of Bobcats pitcher Austin Woodward.

After breezing through the first inning, Woodward struggled to get back on track.

“That’s a tough job,” Poor said. “To sit down for that long makes it tough to find a rhythm. All he got were six pitches to loosen back up.”

Woodward regained his stride in the third. The freshman recorded seven strikeouts in the game, while allowing one run on three hits.

Brian Savely worked a perfect fifth, recording three strikeouts, to wrap up the game.

Matt Smith went 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

Over the next 20 minutes Poor wrestled with a question — would his team keep up the intensity in Game 2.

“We talked about staying focused,” Poor said. “It’s hard to realize it’s a new game and anything can happen.”

Something did happen —  more of Game 1.

Langford turned his attention to the mound.

The junior must have had somewhere to go — efficiently throwing 61 pitches in five innings, and allowed one hit.

Union pounded 10 hits led by Langford with three.

Savely and Woodward picked up two hits apiece.

“It would be nice to bottle some of those runs and hits up,” Poor said. “The boys did a great job staying patient and getting the pitches they wanted. I’m happy with everything they did today.”

Union (6-2) will host Wallowa at noon Saturday.
