Bobcats lock up second place, ready for conference tournament
ATHENA — The Union volleyball team secured second place in the Blue Mountain Conference with a win over Grant Union Thursday, but the regular season wasn’t over yet for the Lady Cats.
Union split with Weston-McEwen and Stanfield Saturday.
The Lady Cats lost to the TigerScots 25-13, 25-13, 25-23, but defeated the Tigers 25-6, 25-14, 25-10.
“Our kids played together,” Union head coach Mendy Clark said.
Union is now 14-10 overall and 12-4 in the BMC. The Lady Cats will face Heppner at noon Saturday in the start of the district tournament.
ELGIN — The Elgin volleyball team split a pair of Blue Mountain Conference matches Saturday. Elgin defeated Grant Union 15-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-25, 18-16.
“We played like a well-oiled machine,” Elgin head coach Carmen Gentry said. “Everyone was covering each other, moving to the ball and playing great defense which is why we won the game.
“Miah Slater and Aria Higgins had some serious kills today with great assisted sets by both Aria Higgins and Jordyn Anderson. Theresa Smolkowski and Katie Witherspoon played great defense against Grant Union.”
Elgin couldn’t keep the momentum going against Heppner, falling in straight sets 25-15, 25-15, 25-20.
“We really let down from how we played earlier in the day,” Gentry said.
Elgin is now 10-13 overall and 6-9 in the BMC. The Lady Huskies close out the regular season Tuesday when they travel to play Enterprise at 5 p.m.
IMBLER — The Imbler volleyball team finished the regular season undefeated, after sweeping Cove in the Old Oregon League finale 25-15, 25-15, 25-9 Friday.
“It was a great overall performance to celebrate senior appreciation night,” Imbler head coach Jennifer Teeter said. “We had an impressive effort to conclude our Old Oregon League schedule.”
The Panther finished the season 10-0 in OOL play, and went 21-0 overall, finishing with the No. 1 ranking headed into the OOL tournament.
Imbler went an astonishing 60-6 in the sets it played this season.
The Panthers’ Malia Mills had a team-best 15 kills. She also finished with 13 digs and two ace serves.
Jacey Teeter dished out 33 assists and added 11 digs.
Emma Bowers and Stephanie McGilvray each added six kills.
Bowers also had six digs.
McGilvray added two solo blocks.
Hannah Wilhelm collected 14 digs and had five kills.
Jessica McDaniel finished with five digs.
NORTH POWDER -— The Cove volleyball team wrapped up the season with a 22-25, 25-16, 25-8, 25-18 Old Oregon League win against Powder Valley Saturday.
With the win, the Leopards wrapped up second place in the OOL with a 7-3 record.
Cove finsihed the regular season 11-8 overall.
Powder Valley finished fourth in the league with a 4-6 record, and had a 9-11 overall mark.
