Bobcats win fourth straight district crown

PENDLETON — The Union girls cross country team had no trouble punching its ticket the the state meet, capturing its fourth consecutive Special District 5 title Friday.

The Bobcast filled out the top four spots en route to a team score of 16. Nyssa finished second with a score of 60.

“It was a pretty dominating race for us, since we took the top four individual places,” Union coach Steve Sheehy said. “This is a pretty darn good girls team. Our top four girls ran together for 2.5 miles of the 3.1 mile race. Once they hit the 800-meter mark, the race was on. We really wanted to save our legs for next week as much as possible.  We hope that we were able to do that.”

Katriel O’Reilly edged out teammate McKenzie Evans for the top individual honor by four seconds. O’Reilly, a senior, finished with a time of 19:55.

Stromy Bullard and Elly Wells finished third and fourth, respectively. Bullard finished with a time of 22:18. Wells finished at the 22:20 mark.

Isabelle Tingelstad, of Enterprise, finished fifth overall with a time of 20:26. The Outlaws finished fifth overall with a team score of 90. Tingelstad, a freshman, will be the lone representative for her school on the girls side.

She will have some company, though.

David Ribich, of Enterprise, tied for the top individual honor on the boys side with a time of 16:16. Nyssa’s Quentin Jenson also finished in 16:16.

Union brought home the boys team district championship with a team score of 32. Nyssa finished second with a score of 51.

The Bobcats are no strangers to the state meet, Sheehy said.

“They earned their 10th consecutive trip to the state meet,” Sheehy said. “The boys race was taken out very fast by Enterprise’s superman David Ribich, Umatilla’s sophomore Fabian Cardenas and Nyssa’s Quenten Jenson.  These three guys hit the first mile in 4:57, so they were really moving.  We knew those three guys were going be hitting it pretty hard for the top three spots, so our strategy was to try and take spots four through seven, which we did. Cory Andrews sealed the win for us with his 11th place finish.”

Riley Sheehy crossed the finish line at the 17:35 mark along with teammate Samuel O’Reilly. Kenneth Sipp came in on their heels at 17:40.

Ethan Black took seventh with a time of 17:51. Andrews, who crossed the finish line at the 18:18 mark, was the last Bobcat runner in.

The state meet will begin 10 a.m. for the girls and 10:35 a.m. for the boys Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene.
