COVE GIRLS IMPROVE TO 8-0 IN OLD OREGON LEAGUE

COVE — The Jordan Valley girls stayed close with the Cove Leopards in the first half, but the Mustangs ran out of gas in the second half of their Old Oregon League basketball game Friday.

The No. 1-ranked Leopards won 52-31, despite just nine points from their leading scorer Lisa Scheele.

The Mustangs played excellent defense on Scheele, but it left her teammates open, Cove coach Dick Royes said.

Amy Puckett and Kelcie Robinson extended the Leopards' slim 21-19 halftime lead in the third quarter with key baskets.

Kathy Mann and Scheele then hit important shots in the fourth.

Mann finished Cove's top scorer with 15 points, followed by Robinson with 14.

The Leopards (12-3 overall, 8-0 OOL) host Prairie City today.

Powder Valley girls edge tired Wallowa

WALLOWA — The Powder Valley girls were at full strength, while the Wallowa Cougars hardly had any in their Old Oregon League basketball game Friday.

Wallowa coach Greg Oveson said the Cougars had hardly practiced because several of the girls have been so sick. "We played tired," he said.

The Badgers won 46-41.

The Badgers (13-4 overall, 6-2 OOL) were led by Hailee Bingham's 14 points and Shauna Nelson's 13.

Amanda Wilson scored nine points to lead Wallowa (11-5, 5-2).

The Cougars travel to Crane, while the Badgers host Jordan Valley today.

Enterprise girls rattle Nyssa early

NYSSA — A quick start by the Enterprise girls translated into a 46-32 Wapiti League basketball win over Nyssa Friday.

"We got a pretty good start right off the bat," Enterprise coach Mike Crawford said. "Our press bothered them. We played well in transition."

Enterprise jumped out to a 12-3 lead after the first quarter.

Lacey Nobles was Enterprise's top scorer with 16 points.

Enterprise (5-10 overall, 4-3 league) hosts Elgin today.

Union girls dominate Joseph on the road

JOSEPH — A "real, strong team effort" by the Union girls was key in Friday's 68-33 Wapiti League basketball win over Joseph Friday, according to coach Wayne Herron.

Kallin Prince led the Bobcats with 21 points, followed by Jana Brotherton with 20 points, three steals and 10 rebounds.

April Savely had 11 rebounds and six points. Rosa Goodman had eight rebounds and eight points. Lena Weitlauf had five points, four steals and six assists.

The Eagles were led by Katie Couch's 11 points.

The Bobcats (6-9 overall, 2-5 league) host Grant Union, while the Eagles (3-10, 2-5) host Elgin today.

Imbler girls struggle against Grant Union

JOHN DAY — The Imbler girls went into Grant Union knowing they were playing for first place against a tough Wapiti League opponent.

Unfortunately, the girls got behind early and were never able to get back in the game, losing only their second game of the year 57-37.

"Our team just didn't show up," said coach Dale Wagner. Wagner said the Panthers had 33 turnovers and shot just 35 percent from the field.

Leanne Foster led the Panthers (6-1 in Wapiti League, 15-2 overall) with 18 points.

Imbler, now in a first-place tie with Grant Union, looks to get back on track today on the road against Joseph.
