BAKER CITY The Cove girls will be heading to state for the third straight year after their 41-37 District 4-1A basketball semifinal win over the Powder Valley Badgers Friday at Baker High School.
The Leopards (17-4) play Wallowa (18-5) at 8:45 tonight for the district championship. Both teams have qualified for state March 5-8 at Baker High School regardless of tonight's outcome.
The Badgers (17-6) play Crane at 2:45 today for third place.
"I had confidence in our team that we would win," Cove's Amy Puckett said. "It was a great game."
Powder Valley coach Allen Bingham said the Badgers kept working their way back into the game.
"We had some other kids step up and do good things," he said.
The Badgers grabbed an early 13-7 lead after the first quarter before the Leopards stormed back in the second quarter with 11 unanswered points to go up 18-13 at the break.
The Badgers fought back in the third after the Leopards built a 23-13 cushion.
"Powder Valley is a very aggressive and tough team," Cove's Lisa Scheele said. "When it counts it's a fight to death."
The Badgers went on a 14-2 run to take the lead at the end of three. Powder Valley's Lacey Lyman capped off the rally with a buzzer-beating three-point shot to Powder Valley ahead 27-25 heading into the fourth. Lyman rolled her ankle in the first quarter.
The fourth quarter went back and forth before the Leopards took control.
With Cove clinging to just a 36-34 lead late in the fourth, Robinson found Jessie Johnson for a quick hoop and Scheele followed with another basket to increase the Leopards' lead to 40-34. Timeout was called with 29.2 seconds left.
Hailee Bingham then hit a three-pointer to bring the Badgers to within 40-37.
The Badgers turned the ball over on their next possession and fouled Mann, who hit one free throw for the winning margin.
"We basically played really well and I think emotion keeps us going," Mann said.
Robinson said her teammates did not panic when the Badgers rallied.
Cove coach Dick Royes said he expected this type of wire-to-wire game.
"I think they (Badgers) should feel good about their effort," Bingham said. "They played hard. They left it all out on the floor. I'm really proud of them."
Hailee Bingham led the Badgers with 13 points. Joelle Bain had 10 rebounds and five points. Kali Miller came off the bench and tallied seven points along with nine rebounds.
Scheele had 17 points, four assists and three steals to lead the Leopards. Robinson chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four blocks. Mann tallied nine points and three steals.
