JORDAN VALLEY — Cove put forth an outstanding defensive effort for the second week in a row as the Leopards won their second-round playoff 46-14 over Jordan Valley.

Cove (7-1) gave up 228 yards of offense to the Mustangs, who came into this game 8-0.

Meanwhile, the Leopards racked up 351 yard of offense, including 266 yards on the ground.

In their playoff opening win over Wallowa last week, the Leopards held the high-powered Cougars to 16 points.

Coach Skip Pereira said two interceptions by the Leopards — by Josh Pfel and Chris Taylor — and the deep kickoffs of Tom VanNice gave Cove great field position.

Cove, coming off a one-win season, has made it to the final 12 of the 1A playoffs. The Leopards play a third-round playoff next week, either on Friday or Saturday, at home against South Wasco County.

"We're grateful. We're on a ride," said coach Skip Pereira. "We're on thin ice, but we're still walking."

Pereira said the Leopards seem to be getting more comfortable, especially on defense. He said Jordan Valley used multiple formations and spread the field on offense, but the Leopards adjusted.

Cove also had to work hard to stop the Mustangs' powerful running back Ryan McKenzie. It took several Leopards to bring him down every time he carried the ball, but Cove kept him relatively in check, giving up 106 yards to McKenzie on 25 carries.

"You gotta lock up on him. He wouldn't go down," said Pereira.

Meanwhile, the Savage brothers combined for 189 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Nate Savage carried 23 times for 99 yards and three TDs while Cody Savage had 19 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown.

In addition to his pick, Josh Pfel caught three passes for 58 yards, including a 6-yard scoring pass from Jason Hagey. Pfel also threw a 9-yard TD pass to Andy Altenburg.
