Coffey, Coxen pace EOU at Runnerís Soul Invitational

SPOKANE, Wash. — Senior Karlee Coffey and junior Kody Coxen paced the Eastern Oregon women’s and men’s cross country squads Saturday at the Runner’s Soul/Erik Anderson Cross Country Invitational.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Senior Karlee Coffey and junior Kody Coxen paced the Eastern Oregon women’s and men’s cross country squads Saturday at the Runner’s Soul/Erik Anderson Cross Country Invitational.

Coffey finished second in the women’s 5,000-meter race with Coxen claiming the seventh place spot in the men’s event. Coffey’s finish helped the Mountaineer women to a 10th place team finish. The men finished third.

“Coffey ran a really strong race. She just missed her school record despite feeling a little sluggish,” remarked EOU head cfoach Ben Welch. “Kody ran an extremely strong race from start to finish.”

Coffey ran from start to finish with Hillary Holt of the College of Idaho.

The duo broke from the pack at the gun and led the entire race. Holt threw in a surge just after 2,000 meters and opened a small gap between the two.

The gap remained about the same for the remainder of the race with Holt winning in 17 minutes and 23.37 seconds. Coffey finished in 17:39.33.

Junior college transfer Jodine Steemers (Tucson, Ariz.), running in just her second race for the Mounties, finished 11th. Steemers started back in the pack and continually moved forward throughout the race. By the 2,000-meters mark she had moved herself into the top 20. With less than half a mile to go, she had worked her way into the top ten.

After being passed by a number of runners over the next 400 meters, Steemers kicked home passing a handful to finish in 18:43.48.

“Jodine turned in an outstanding performance. She bettered her personal best by over 40 seconds.

She has been a real pleasure,” said Welch.

Coffey and Steeemers were followed by junior Cristal Delgado (Hermiston), 92nd (20:41.47), freshman Kailey Wilson (Cooper Center, Ark.), 94th (20:47.06), senior Jessianne Heley (North Bend), 122nd (21:41.23), freshman Hailey Hollingsworth (Pocatello, Idaho), 124th (21:48.76), sophomore Audrey Love (Lamoni, Iowa), 146th (23:34.35), and sophomore Shoshoni Walker (Union), 153rd (25:44.54).

The College of Idaho ladies, the number-four ranked team in the NAIA, collected the team title with Carroll College (sixth ranked) second and Lewis-Clark State College (ninth ranked) third.

Coxen paced a strong showing by the number 13-ranked Mountie men. Coxen, along with freshmen Kody Shriver (Kalama, Wash.), Lucas Updike (Ketchikan, Alaska), junior Hans Roelle (Anchorage, Alaska), senior Ryan Booth (Post Falls, Idaho) and sophomore Gus Titus (Burns), ran as a pack through the first 3,000 meters of the 8,000-meter race. At that point, Coxen broke from the pack and forged for the front.

Shriver and Updike moved slightly ahead of Booth, Roelle and Titus as the neared the 5,000-meter point in the race.

“One of the major focuses this year is for the men to run strong as a pack,” offered Welch.

“Today was a great example to that.”

Over the final 3,000 meters Coxen moved into the top 10 and finished in 25:35.93 for seventh. Shriver, 21st, closed strong and finished in 26:09.72.

Roelle finished just behind in 24th, 26:15.55.

Updike followed in 32nd (26:26.49), Booth was 41st (26:37.41), with Titus finishing 45th in 26:44.00.

Eastern also got strong performances from sophomore Seth Lougee (San Antonio, Texas), 72nd (27:17.87), junior Carlos Hernandez (Los Angeles, Calif.) 76th (27:23.61), junior Zach Seely (Portland), 78th (27:30.23), sophomore Alex Martinez (Reno, Nev.), 95th (28:07.03), junior Salome Castillo (Parkdale), 101st (28:14.45) and sophomore Calvin Edward (Wasilla, Alaska), 103rd (28:24.74).

The Mountaineers scored 94 points to finish one point back of College of Idaho (11th ranked) for third.

Lewis-Clark State College (sixth ranked) took the team title with 44 points.

Eastern will be in action next week at the Charles Bowles Invitational at Willamette University next Saturday.
