Coffey sets course record to lead Mounties at Wildhorse

PENDLETON — Mother Nature was the big winner Friday evening at the Kyle Burnside Wildhorse Cross Country Meet. Windy and rainy conditions made it tough on the runners slowing times and making footing tough.

Senior Karlee Coffey paced the women’s team by controlling the 5,000-meter race from the start. Coffey went to the front at the gun and was never headed, running a course record 17 minutes and 45 seconds.

Junior Jodine Steemers raced in the top three the entire way ending up third in 18:59.

The pack of senior Talissa Baldovino, senior Leigh Anne MacCarthy and senior Cristal Delgado ran strong throughout the race, with Baldovino finishing eighth in 19:32.

MacCarthy ran 19:59 for thirteenth place, and Delgado was sixteenth in 20:18.

Freshman Kailey Wilson (finished 19th, 20:35, senior Jessianne Heley was 22nd, 20:42, freshman Hailee Hollingsworth), 36th, 22:31, and sophomore Audrey Love, 40th, 23:32 rounded out the Eastern women’s squad.

“I am really pleased with the races that Jessianne and Talissa ran today,” stated EOU Head Cross Country Coach Ben Welch. “They ran the best races they have run all season.”

The men’s 8,000 meter race was led from start to finish by redshirt Mountie DJ Flores. Flores finished in a time of 25:05.

Junior Kody Coxen ran near the front the whole way and came home in third running 25:36.

“Kody ran a solid race from start to finish,” remarked Welch.

The next six Mounties finished every other place starting in eighth with junior Isaac Updike, 26:00, sophomore Hans Roelle was 10th in 26:06, followed by senior Ryan Booth in 12th, 26:14, junior Zach Seely finished 14th, 26:21, sophomore Alex Martinez took 16th in 26:34, with freshman Kody Shriver rounded out the group in 26:39.

“Zach ran his best race of the season and ran in our top five for the first time,” said Welch.

Junior Carlos Hernandez in 23rd, 26:53, led a pack of four Mounties in places 25 through 27.

Senior Ramon Hernandez) ran 26:58, sophomore Gus Titus, 27:07, and sophomore Seth Lougee, 27:08, to finish in those spots respectively.

Sophomore Calvin Edward , 30th, 27:20, junior Joshua Wise, 33rd, 27:55, and freshman PJ Sebastiani, 36th, 28:36, rounded things out for the Eastern men.

The men’s and women’s team will take this next week off as they prepare for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships in Portland on Nov 3.
